Quick. Close your eyes and imagine a pianist. What do you see?
How you doin’, ladies?
If you pictured anything along the lines of a person who is overly proper, well-primed, awkward and gawky, you may be in for a surprise. Let us shatter your pianist stereotype. Behold the top (out of many!) reasons why pianists are not just your stereotypical geeks:
1. Their hand-eye coordination is top-notch
If you’re a pianist, chances are this won’t happen to you. All that piano-playing and simultaneous note-reading really develops hand-eye coordination!
2. They have a knack for music
Studies show that a majority of pianists can play additional instruments as well. They’re the polyglots (Google it) of the music world!
3. They have good rhythm
Timing is everything in the piano world. When played with no rhythm, a Beethoven piece can sound like a howling banshee. With that said, it’ll be hard for you to find a pianist moving awkwardly on the dance floor.
4. They have nimble fingers
All that piano playing does quite a workout for finger muscles and agility. If you tend to display klutzy mannerisms, perhaps taking up the piano is a solution for you.
5. Hearing harmonious piano music all the time improves their pitch
While not all pianists necessarily have a good voice, chances are they are not tone-deaf and don’t sound like nails on a chalkboard when they try to sing.
6. John Lennon! Lady Gaga! Taylor Swift! And many many more.
Pretty much enough said. The realm of pianists does not only include classical pianists such as Beethoven and Bach. Yes, yes, some of your very favorite definitely-not-geeky-artists are pianists themselves!
7. They are highly developed in self-expression
It is a question for the ages, what makes a geek a geek? Well, for one thing, they struggle with communication and typically keep emotions bottled up inside. A pianist does not have this trouble you see, for they have a perfect medium with which to express themselves (the piano!). Playing the piano is not a robotic skill. Quite the contrary, to play well is to connect to your feelings and open the gates of emotion!
8. They can bring life to a party
Geeks suck life out of generally don’t do much good to social events. In this sense as well, pianists are far from geeks. Why? Because pianists can create music, and music unites people and makes them have fun.
