Carlos Gardel (11 December 1890 – 24 June 1935) was a French Argentine singer, songwriter, composer and actor. Gardel, who died at a young age of 45, is considered to be the most prominent figure in the history of tango. He is the son of a single French mother. and moved to Buenos Aires as a child. Gardel gained popularity with his rendition of Pascual Contursi and Samuel Castriota's "Mi Noche Triste". It became a very popular song with over 10,000 copies sold and earned him an international tour. (Again, this is in the early 1900's.) His tango career was supplemented with few acting gigs. Carlos Gardel was killed in 1935 in a tragic plane crash. He is considered to be a tragic hero in Latin America.
