"Mary Had a Little Lamb" was first published as a poem in 1830, written by Sarah Josepha Hale, and inspired by a real incident. Later in the 1830s, Lowell Mason set the nursery rhyme to a melody. When Thomas Edison invented the phonograph in 1877, this song was the first thing he recorded.
