In 1825, Franz Schubert composed seven songs from Walter Scott's popular epic poem "The Lady of the Lake" (Opus 52). The sixth song, whose title translates to "Ellen's third song", is one of Schubert's most popular works and became known as "Ave Maria", after its first line.
