Green Day is an American punk rock band formed in 1986 by vocalist/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt. For much of their career, the band has been a trio with drummer Tré Cool. In 2012, guitarist Jason White became a full-time member making them a quartet. Green Day's sound is often compared to first wave punk rock bands such as the Ramones, The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Jam, and the Buzzcocks. The band's name comes from a term referring to a day spent smoking pot, hanging around, and doing absolutely nothing. The band has been described as being "punk revivalists who recharged the energy of speedy, catchy three-chord punk-pop songs."
