The band is composed of Pat Monahan (vocals), Jimmy Stafford (lead guitar), Jerry Becker (piano and rhythm guitar), Drew Shoals (drums), Hector Maldonado (bass), Sakai Smith (back up vocals) and Nikita Huston (back up vocals). The group accomplished mainstream success with their debut album Train, which released in 1996 with the hit "Meet Virginia". When they recorded their first album they were not signed to a label . They funded the album themselves for $25,000. Columbia Records signed them in 1998 following the release of their first album, first after rejecting them in 1996.
